The Legend of the Duergar
by Janadorf Dorfson- Published in 4093
Once Upon a Time, in a land not far from here, the dwarves of the tribe of Duerdruk lived peacefully in the mountains, making a fine existance for thier people. Thier mines flourished, thier crops flourished, for the people of Duerdruk, life was good. Unfortunately,
times were going to take a turn for the worst.
On a cold winter morning, a small duergar child came running to town with a warning that the adults dismissed as an overactive imagination. Huge folk were stamping towards them. The duergar were not oblivious to the existance of the humans to the south- they foolishly dismissed the child's warning, thinking he only saw a lost human, possibly adventurers, which although in themselves potentially deadly, were quite rare around that time.
The mistake was deadly. In the spring, the huge folk attacked and tore the villiage asunder- these huge folk were the Giants. They were a warlike people from the northeast, with thier eyes set on the land of the Duerdruk's people. The Duergar didn't want to go quietly into the night, and despite being outnumbered, outsized, and seemingly outsmarted, they fought valiantly to protect thier land from the Giants. Under the guidance of the Duergar King Oleg Gleb, they held thier ground.
However, a strange affliction befell the young Duergar King. At the age of only 46, he returned to the eternal forge. This was a deathblow to the morale of the duergar. Without thier fearless leader, their future seemed bleak, and very giant filled. There was little hope to be had, and many of the duergar began fleeing thier land, accepting that the good life was over- thier prayers would be unanswered...
The few that remained, too prideful to flee, settled in for thier last hurrah... Only to be pleasantly surprised. On the day they feared thier anniliation, a stunning, beautiful, charming, captivating, sexy, grand woman appeared. Although she was a human, she stood before the giants, despite none of the duergar explaining thier situations. As the giant's armies came, she displayed a power that stunned the duergar, who despite having some access to similar powers of thier own, never witnessed such power. The lone woman's might sent the giants fleeing. She turned to the duergar, and spoke to them.
"My friends, I know of your predicament. I am your angel sent to free you from your suffering, to lead you to a place where once again you may flourish as you once did. You will be freed from the opression of these butchers, and it will reamin that way for many generations to come". The woman rallied the reamaining dwarves, and bowed to serve her for saving thier lives. They regarded her only as 'The Queen', although they knew her true name, it was considered disrespectful to speak it.
The woman indeed led the duergar to a land and freed them of war, and other calamities. Although the location of this land is unknown, it is believed they live in peace and harmony to this very day.
